Frequently Asked Questions
Looking for experienced marketing leadership without hiring a full-time CMO? I work with startups and growing businesses as a Fractional Marketing Leader, providing the strategy, direction, and hands-on support needed to build marketing programs that actually support growth.
Here are some of the most common questions about fractional marketing leadership, fractional CMO services, and working together.
What is a Fractional CMO or Fractional Marketing Leader?
A Fractional CMO or Fractional Marketing Leader provides experienced marketing leadership to a company on a part-time or contract basis.
I use the term Fractional Marketing Leader because the role often goes beyond traditional CMO-level strategy. Depending on what your company needs, I can develop the strategy, prioritize where you're investing, lead internal marketers and external partners, and get hands-on to help move initiatives forward.
Essentially, you get an experienced marketing leader on your team without the cost or commitment of hiring a full-time executive.
What does a Fractional Marketing Leader actually do?
It depends on what your business needs.
My work can include go-to-market strategy, positioning and messaging, demand generation, paid media, content strategy, account-based marketing (ABM), sales enablement, marketing analytics, team leadership, agency management, PR, events, and more.
More importantly, I help answer the bigger questions: What should we actually be doing? What should we prioritize? What's working? And where should we stop wasting time or money?
When should a company hire a Fractional CMO?
Fractional marketing leadership can be a great fit when your company needs experienced marketing direction but isn't ready—or doesn't need—to hire a full-time CMO.
I commonly work with companies that:
-
Have little or no internal marketing leadership
-
Have a junior marketer who needs strategic direction
-
Are preparing to launch or enter a new market
-
Have tried different marketing tactics without a cohesive strategy
-
Are growing and need a more sophisticated marketing program
-
Work with several agencies or freelancers but need someone to lead the bigger picture
-
Need senior marketing expertise without another full-time executive salary
You don't necessarily need a bigger marketing team. Sometimes you just need someone experienced deciding what that team should actually be doing.
Can you build a marketing strategy from scratch?
Yes. 0→1 marketing is one of my specialties.
I've spent much of my career helping founders and leadership teams turn business goals into an actual marketing strategy—from identifying the right audiences and positioning to determining which channels, campaigns, technology, and resources make sense.
I've also helped build and scale marketing functions through multiple stages of company growth, including from early-stage startup through Series B and acquisition.
What is a go-to-market strategy?
A go-to-market (GTM) strategy defines how your company will reach, attract, and convert the customers most likely to buy from you.
That can include your ideal customer profile, audience segmentation, positioning, messaging, competitive differentiation, marketing channels, sales strategy, launch plan, budget, and success metrics.
For early-stage companies, I think one of the most valuable things a GTM strategy can do is create focus. You probably could pursue 20 different marketing ideas. The strategy determines which few are actually worth pursuing first.
Do you specialize in B2B marketing?
Yes. Most of my career has been spent in B2B marketing, including startups, SaaS, technology, insurance, professional services, and businesses with complex offerings or longer sales cycles.
I'm particularly comfortable taking something complicated and figuring out how to make its value easy to understand—then building a strategy for getting that message in front of the right people.
Do you only work with startups?
No. While I have extensive experience with early-stage and growth-stage startups, I also work with established small and midsize businesses that need stronger marketing leadership.
The common thread is usually that the company has growth goals but doesn't need—or isn't ready to build—a large senior-level internal marketing team.
Can you work with our existing marketing employee, agency, or freelancers?
Absolutely.
You don't need to fire your agency or replace your existing team to bring in a Fractional Marketing Leader.
I often act as the strategic layer connecting leadership, internal marketers, agencies, and specialized contractors. I can establish priorities, manage resources, evaluate performance, and make sure everyone is working toward the same business goals.
When specialized support is needed—such as design, paid media, development, or another discipline—I can also help identify and manage the right resources.
What's the difference between a Fractional CMO and a marketing consultant?
A marketing consultant is often brought in to solve a specific problem, provide recommendations, or complete a defined project.
A Fractional CMO or Fractional Marketing Leader typically has a more ongoing role in the business—helping set priorities, make strategic decisions, oversee execution, evaluate performance, and adjust the marketing program as the company grows.
I offer both models. Some companies need an ongoing marketing leader. Others simply need an experienced outside perspective and a clear plan.
Do you execute marketing, or do you only provide strategy?
Both.
I believe strategy is only valuable if your company can actually execute it. Depending on the engagement, I can operate primarily as an advisor, serve as your Fractional Marketing Leader, or get more hands-on with execution.
If something requires a specialist, I can also work with your existing resources or trusted contractors rather than pretending one marketer should be an expert at everything.
How do I know which marketing channels my business should use?
We figure that out before pouring money into them.
I don't start an engagement assuming you need Google Ads, SEO, social media, events, email, PR, or any other specific tactic.
Instead, I look at your customers, sales process, market, competition, current traction, budget, goals, and internal resources. Then we determine which channels are most likely to make sense for your business.
Sometimes the answer is doing more. Sometimes it's doing fewer things better.
How much does a Fractional CMO cost?
Fractional CMO pricing varies depending on how involved the marketing leader is in the business.
My engagements range from lightweight ongoing advisory support to hands-on fractional marketing leadership. I also offer project-based strategy work for companies that need a strong marketing foundation or growth plan before committing to ongoing support.
The advantage of the fractional model is flexibility: you're paying for the level of experienced marketing leadership your company actually needs rather than immediately taking on a full-time executive hire.
Can you help us figure out our marketing budget?
Yes.
Rather than choosing an arbitrary percentage of revenue or starting with what individual channels cost, I look at what you're trying to accomplish and work backward.
That includes determining what you can realistically accomplish with your available budget, where your investment is most likely to have an impact, what should be handled internally, and where outside expertise is worth paying for.
Where are you located, and do you work with companies remotely?
I'm based in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania region and work with companies both locally and across the United States.
Most Fractional CMO, Fractional Marketing Leader, advisory, and go-to-market engagements can be handled remotely.
What types of companies are the best fit for you?
I work best with founders and leadership teams who know marketing needs more direction but don't necessarily need another full-time executive.
That often means an early-stage or growth-stage B2B startup or an established small to midsize business with little or no senior marketing leadership.
You may already have a junior marketer, freelancers, an agency, or a collection of marketing activities underway. My job is to bring the strategy, experience, and leadership that connects all of those pieces to your growth goals.
How do we get started?
Usually, we start with a conversation about your business—not a sales pitch about a predetermined marketing package.
We'll talk about where the company is today, where you're trying to go, what's already working, what's frustrating you, and what resources you currently have.
From there, I can recommend the level of marketing strategy or leadership that makes the most sense for where you are right now.
